What is UPF? Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) is a rating system that measures the UV protection provided by fabric. A surf shirt with a UPF of 50 only allows 1/50th of the UV radiation falling on the surface of the garment to pass through it. In other words, it blocks 49/50ths or 98% of the UV radiation.
What's the difference between a rash guard and a surf shirt? Rash guards are meant to fit very tight - even hard to get on when dry. When they get wet, they become looser but are still snug. If you are looking for more of a t-shirt fit, look for a "Surf Shirt". A surf shirt will be more comfortable when dry but very baggy when wet.
